YUKON QUEST INTERNATIONAL SLED DOG RACE
Back to: MUSHING INFORMATION CENTER
The Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race runs 1,000 miles from Fairbanks, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Every year the race alternates direction, starting in Fairbanks and then in Whitehorse. A sister race to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, the Yukon Quest takes a more northern route during the heart of winter. Since the first competition in 1984, the racers have followed the old mail routes and Gold Rush trails created over a century ago. Racers summit three mountain ranges including the treacherous Eagle Summit and spend hundreds of miles on the frozen rivers of the North. The Yukon Quest is both a celebration of true arctic transportation as well as a grueling international competition.

Aliy was the first woman and youngest competitor to every win this elite dog marathon. She credits her superior four-legged team mates, with her main leader "Pedro" receiving top honors.
